My Greek friend Marina (
Medea89) asked:
Which part of Corfu did you like Jude?
That, my dear, was Corfu town — pic from my travels shown above.
We stayed near there (camping) back in the 70s and loved it then — the place and the people and the dogs.
When I went back to the island in 2001 I made a big mistake by booking accommodation at a place that turned out to be on the other side of the island from Corfu town, and filled with American college kids and organised activities (thanks,
Lonely Planet!).
There is a funny story to tell about that some time, but basically after finding out on the first night that dinner involved dress-ups and toga parties, I holed myself up in my room when not away in the town.
Unfortunately, town was about 40 minutes’ drive away by a circuitous route and involved expensive taxi rides. Still I got to see the countryside that way.
Also learnt that young Americans can be just as nauseating as young Aussies, but it was less the ouzo, more their complete lack of interest in the local culture.
The Pink Palace is an enclave where the object is to get laid, and I hope some of you parents of college kids are reading this! Encourage them to aim a bit higher than that.
At least the Aussies try Greek dancing (tragic as the results usually are).
