“EVEN BACTERIA GET LONELY”

Apparently bacteria communicate with each other via chemical messaging. But if they find that their chemical messages are bouncing back unreceived, they know they must be trapped alone behind walls (possibly being consumed by a macrophage). At this point they “panic” and turn on genes to release corrosive chemicals to bore their way to freedom. (See the Discovery article)

Having hated science at school, I totally get the bit about boring their way to freedom.

But paradoxically, and I’m sure there is a more impressive physics term I could use here, the Jollilama makes the whole subject of science quite riveting.

The author’s longer posts stored here reveal a smart mind and enviable word skills, though I’ve had to save that one for later apart from a quick scan.
