Parts of one's personality consigned to the attic

http://mrpickett.tumblr.com/post/420646896/apparently-its-not-the-end-for-books

stumbot:

Mr-Pickett asks, “The attic will be somewhat crowded, although I’m not sure that all those people you named exist, Stumbot. Did you really do your research on that? ”

Yes, I have researched this. All of them exist some of the time. But some of them don’t exist full-time. And some of them are not themselves.

kahlilagibran’s existence is confirmed by Cloggo but as she “speaks from 1972” and apparently is in this century on a part-time basis.

13andbored, atlanticjude and vanillajude identify themselves as “Jude, living simultaneously in Tumblr and StumbleUpon”. What we have here is a unique case of multiple personalities in three dimensions.

Judefa the Stumbler is Tumblr kg13 but not the tumblr judefa, who seems to be Italian.

toodarktosee uses the address jude.tumblr.com. Insufficient information to tell who this is.

Therefore I think you can be reassured, sir, that your rooms on the 3rd floor will not be as crowded as it would seem. The faces associated with the names will most assuredly change from moment to moment. The material possessions of time travelers and those who are someone or somewhere else at the moment may be easily moved from the 3rd floor to the attic and back again as needed.

BTW, sir, I noticed that the comment box on your page is in Italian. Could it be that you are, in real life, the Italian Jude?

Thank you for setting the record straight, Stumbot — I knew I could rely on you to investigate thoroughly before committing too many people to the attic; I just couldn’t see how that worked for a start.

I have been frustrated by both the Italian window and the fact that my comments are invariably rejected by Disqus. Maybe it thinks I am an impostor? I would very much like an English window such as the rest of you have, but haven’t been able to acquire one yet. I do blame the Italian Judefa. What on earth is an Italian doing with a name like Jude? It is highly implausible, and yet Disqus has obviously fallen for it.

Frustratedly yours, Pickett

PS My theory on the weirdly-named judes — try-out personalities for 13andbored? She has been gone from SU for some time and is yet to make an appearance on Tumblr as far as I am aware. But she is at an age where they are attracted to a different style each week, and not keen on being pinned down.

Apparently it's NOT The End for books

Media_http30mediatumb_dmcbr

Well I now know, thanks to all who answered, that books will last a few years or decades yet — just because we like them and they have a snuggle appeal that even the sexiest laptop can’t match.

I would argue the case for Macbooks though, and the coming iPad, and have to admit my love of books as a medium is tied closely to (a) past associations and (b) a paper fetish.

I love the FEEL of a good book, its cover, pages and bindings, as a work of art. And in that sense a blank journal can be equal with a photo album or a copy of a classic. I am talking about an art object here, and the pleasure of turning the pages and watching a sequence (of words or images) unfold much more slowly than anything in a movie … until — The End; close book and digest it for a while.

No-one else owning up to a book or paper fetish as such? You can get back to me on that.

Now a further thanks to all of you, what a magnificent group effort, for all the contributions I received in the last week.

As a result, it has been established that …

what assaulted the senses of those kids was … (see Elledark in the notes)

And some good news

Baby Chewy, who needed only a caption, got a whole shaggy dog story written in his honour.
Thank you to master story-teller Cloggo for that one!

Also

We have tenants for this house and I was delighted to find I am one of them. The attic will be somewhat crowded, although I’m not sure that all those people you named exist, Stumbot. Did you really do your research on that?

The basement had me worried for a start but it has turned out to be quite civilised considering your choice of tenants are legends of the English-eccentric class.

Finally, to this rather confronting image …

Cloggo put a well-rounded case for curves, with the suggestion that this might be Victoria Beckham Peckham giving a “fine big girl” a blood-draining peck and trying to rob her of her very lifeforce.

(Cloggo likes a big girl)

Thank you all of you, including all I haven’t mentioned individually.
This has been a great start to the year, and I’ll be back with more for you soon.

Your friend Sam
