Well, anyone for Philadelphia?
Stumbot pointed out something that had escaped me but makes perfect sense:
Curious to find text message “LMI…” on a tombstone from 1902 because text messaging hadn’t been invented yet (perhaps Pickett is a time traveler), but also because “LMIRL” means “Let’s Meet In Real Life”.Stumbot, Philadelphia DOES suit me down to the ground as a matter of fact. Great city for history buffs, walkers, books and classical music. Let’s make a day of it at the Mutter Museum, and we can nut out a project for the kids here based on what we see. It is the only museum where I have actually gotten down on my hands and knees to read the labels on the exhibits. There is a LOT to see and do in Philadelphia, so if some of the students want to make suggestions or join us, all the better. Also, would anyone like to see my collection of civil war ephemera?
The missing letters ‘R’ and ‘L’ aren’t (in)visible in the photo, but there is obviously more text on the bottom of the tombstone beneath “beloved wife”. I think this is Pickett’s cryptic version of W.C. Fields epitaph, “On the whole, I’d rather be in Philadelphia”. The beard is cute, but what is that green stuff you’re drinking?

Photographic trance
Both images from a page showcasing Belgian Yves Ullen.
His work is described as more like dance: Yves Ullens dances round his subjects like a whirling Dervish possessed by a mystical rite.
“Tracker of light”, the expression coined by Genevieve Bergé, has become his trademark, explaining the daily quest of someone who chases stardust as though in a trance, always ready to catch an image. At the crack of dawn, just as a ray of light peeps through a thin curtain, the hunt is on. More than light, it is colour that attracts him.
This dance, which he compares to tai chi and gymnastics of the soul, creates a universe where matter, texture, shape, volume, colour and the “state of light” have their own life, freed from the purely figurative.

THE ONE COUNTRY THAT HAS USED NUCLEAR WEAPONS PLAYS THE VICTIM

The Hiroshima bomb killed an estimated 250,000 people, yet the massacre is seldom referred to in the West; the anniversary is ignored.Where are the images of death and destruction that could shape the attitudes of new generations? They were suppressed. This website claims the US imposed heavy censorship in the aftermath of the bombing. Should we be surprised?
It presents some images that could powerfully sway opinions … these are a couple:
However, within a couple of years, I believe, The War Game was off the school curriculum and banned.

As a 12-year-old in New Zealand I was taken in a school group to see Peter Watkins’ documentary about an imagined nuclear attack on England. The War Game impressed the horrors of nuclear war on all of us.
However, within a couple of years, I believe, The War Game was off the school curriculum and banned.

'Jesus Christ at the front door'
Bloody Ricki’s arrived back in town — he went to see Rud the other day.
Rud thought it was Jesus Christ at the front door.
And he’s still going on about “cats” every second word, and tripping.
Gets to be a bore, actual.

The rector spoke with a disgusting plum and went on about teaching her bloody kids to be young ladies.
And all these silly little bitches, all dressed the same, filed across the stage to shake hands and get prizes. They looked like sheep going through a dip.
Afterwards all the little ladies with hyphenated names crowded round the dux saying “Oh congratulations, Donna, how splendid.”

Job interviews
I’ve been in Dunedin and had a really good interview at The Evening Star.
They offered me a J2 ($60 a week), which is a really good promotion.
I won’t be on a J2 for two years yet at The Southland Times.Realised afterwards I went through the interview with my jersey inside out — labels and seams sticking out everywhere.
He paid some compliments and said my work showed I knew how to capture people’s attention. Then the bastard said he couldn’t employ a girl on his sub-editing staff.
“It’s not heard of and won’t ever happen on the ODT.”
He said he had more than he could cope with in four or five girl reporters.
