Apparently it's NOT The End for books
Well I now know, thanks to all who answered, that books will last a few years or decades yet — just because we like them and they have a snuggle appeal that even the sexiest laptop can’t match.
I would argue the case for Macbooks though, and the coming iPad, and have to admit my love of books as a medium is tied closely to (a) past associations and (b) a paper fetish.
I love the FEEL of a good book, its cover, pages and bindings, as a work of art.
And in that sense a blank journal can be equal with a photo album or a copy of a classic.
I am talking about an art object here, and the pleasure of turning the pages and watching a sequence (of words or images) unfold much more slowly than anything in a movie … until — The End; close book and digest it for a while.
No-one else owning up to a book or paper fetish as such?
You can get back to me on that.
Now a further thanks to all of you, what a magnificent group effort, for all the contributions I received in the last week.
As a result, it has been established that …
what assaulted the senses of those kids was … (see Elledark in the notes)
And some good news
Baby Chewy, who needed only a caption, got a whole shaggy dog story written in his honour.
Thank you to master story-teller Cloggo for that one! Also We have tenants for this house and I was delighted to find I am one of them. The attic will be somewhat crowded, although I’m not sure that all those people you named exist, Stumbot. Did you really do your research on that? The basement had me worried for a start but it has turned out to be quite civilised considering your choice of tenants are legends of the English-eccentric class. Finally, to this rather confronting image … Cloggo put a well-rounded case for curves, with the suggestion that this might be Victoria Beckham Peckham giving a “fine big girl” a blood-draining peck and trying to rob her of her very lifeforce. (Cloggo likes a big girl) Thank you all of you, including all I haven’t mentioned individually.
This has been a great start to the year, and I’ll be back with more for you soon.
